The Art Of Procrastination

The weather is cold outside.

There has been no school or other activities this week.

I feel no motivation whatsoever to get stuff accomplished around home.

So because I am encouraging my procrastination, here's a few more pictures of our trip, since I really wish I was back there right now!

Our second excursion was to a place called Xel-Ha (pronounced Shell Ha). It is essentially a huge natural aquarium. We spent a full day there and I still wanted more!

We spent the majority of our time snorkeling around and viewing the large amounts of fish everywhere. I wouldn't be able to tell you what most of the fish were, but they sure were neat to look at! Some have amazing colors, like the rainbow parrotfish (one of the FEW that I knew thanks to a Wii game called Endless Ocean!)

The underwater pictures that we do have were taken with a cheap disposable camera. The pictures certainly don't have a high quality but you can see enough to get the right idea.

We also opted to do a Sea Trek which was a neat experience. We got to put on these large space-like helmets and walk on the ocean floor. During that walk we were surrounded by large fish and several sting rays. We were allowed to touch the sting rays, which is really neat. They feel like sandpaper on top and very smooth and slimy on the bottom. Apparently they are very docile creatures so they happily accommodate having people touch them. Our tour guide also brought along some food for the fish so it was neat to watch the feeding frenzy!

We also did the lazy river (you float down in tubes) but we chose to use our flippers to paddle and make it a "not-so-lazy river". The best part of that was probably seeing the little hermit crabs along the edge of the rocks. They were everywhere!

We also saw some other animals there. Of course the iguana is around just about anywhere you look but we had to take some pictures for our girls. This one turned out really well.

And for the extra-touristy sucker person, you could pay to have your picture taken with these birds. We certainly didn't feel the need to do that but we managed to get some pics of our own for the girls to see.

Is it sad that we already talk about when we can go back here again someday?

Mayan Ruins and More

Our first excursion last week was with a company called "AlltourNative" to visit the ancient Mayan pyramid in a town called Coba.

We found the history to be quite fascinating.

Here is a ball court that would have had 2 players. They would toss around a 9 pound ball and try to get it into the rings on the sides. Sort of like basketball. Except you didn't want to be the winner. The winner was considered to be the best sacrifice to their gods so they would have to "self-mutilate" themselves and die. Better to be the loser and stay alive!

Here are some stone tablets that were like message boards for the people. It would get updated with various information until it was "erased" and a new message was inscribed.

Here is the main pyramid, Nohuch Mul. It was 138 feet tall and the highest in the region. Unlike other ruins in the Riviera Maya, this one is still open for the public to climb.

I didn't think that my fear of heights would permit me to climb very high, but I successfully made it all the way to the top. I just looked at one step at a time, and refused to look down!! Unfortunately right after we got to the top, it started to RAIN! This makes the rocky steps very very slippery so we waited until the downpour slowed to a trickle. Fortunately there was a small temple at the top where about a dozen people took shelter.

It was an amazing view from the top. At one time, this wouldn't have been jungle but instead the city of Coba.

After we left Coba, our group drove to a Mayan village called Pac Chen. Some of the ladies there made us a traditional Mayan lunch. We had vegetable soup, rice with black beans, empanadas, chicken, and for those who were less adventurous: spaghetti. We also drank flavored water that was made from flowers. It was very tasty!

After lunch, we canoed around a small lake. Then we walked into the jungle for a tour of our surroundings. We had to take a zipline across an open cenote, which is essentially a natural pool fed by underground rivers. I was absolutely TERRIFIED to do this, but I managed to survive in one piece. Very fortunate, considering that we later found 5-foot alligators waiting in the water at the end of the zipline. Seriously!! They took our pictures for various parts of this excursion but I was lucky enough to have shielded my face since I was thrashing around like a wild women trying to make the dumb thing stop going so FAST! (Can you tell that I really liked this?)

Next we walked through some more jungle until we got to the entrance of this closed cenote. This time we rappelled down about 120 feet into the water. Essentially this cenote was a large underground cave. The water was the clearest we had ever seen! We could easily see the bottom which was about 100 feet down. It was really amazing. And strangely enough, the rappelling wasn't anywhere near as scary as the crazy zipline. I could control my speed and take my time.

Later to get back up, the options were the rope ladder or the "Mayan elevator" where they pull you back up using the rappelling ropes. It was a little scary, but certainly much easier than attempting the ladder, which is what John chose to do.

We went back to our hotel room that night and crashed after we ordered in some room service. I just love all-inclusives! Even the room service is included!!

We're Home

Yesterday we arrived back at home.

We had an absolutely FABULOUS time away!!!! I will show more pictures and stuff about what we did in a post later this week, but for now I will just show a few pics from our resort.

We stayed at the Grand Sirenis which was a long drive after leaving the Cancun airport but it was definitely worth the wait! We would go back to that same resort any day!

Look at how pretty the bed is! Each day our young maid (who was actually a man) did something fancy with the sheets or towels on the bed. This was my favorite design with fresh flowers.

Before leaving on our trip, we said that it would be nice to do something like this every 5 years or so. Now that we have been to Paradise, we would LOVE to be able to go every year or two.

Probably not going to happen.

But I can dream, right?

Tomorrow We Leave!!!

I think that we are just about ready for our big trip tomorrow!

This week we have been making lists, adding things to our suitcases and getting the house ready for company.

The girls are anxious to have grandma and grandpa here soon.

I am anxious to not be woken up before 7 am for the next week.

Unfortunately, I'm sure my body will just be used to the routine of waking up super early. Well I don't really want to sleep the day away anyways. Afterall, this is the view I will have:

Yesterday I went to get a much-needed hair cut. While I was there, I also got new highlights and a wonderful pedicure! It was a wonderful way to anticipate my trip (and also make everyone jealous since the weather is back to -40 C again).
I'm not really into the pastel colors so I choose bright red for my toes. I love it!

Obviously I won't be updating this for over a week now. I'll show pictures when I return!

Hot beach and slushy drinks......here I come!

Only 84 Days!!

Well it is official!!!!

John and I are going to Mexico in January!!

We leave on January 25, in exactly 84 days from today (but who's counting?!?).

We are going to the Riviera Maya, where we will enjoy the amazing hot sun, beautiful beaches, great food and drinks, Caribbean water, sightseeing (Ancient Mayan ruins), shopping and enjoying 10 years of married bliss.

Well maybe not every moment has been bliss, but it certainly is an accomplishment to make it to 10 years in tact. Those things that test us can only make us stronger, right?

Our all-inclusive package includes the usuals; water sports, snorkeling, food (7 a la carte restaurants) & drinks, and some extras such as dance lessons (how on earth can I convince John that this will be FUN?), archery, lazy river with tubes in the pool, and an ice cream parlour.

Alright so now I really need to work on this exercise stuff. I haven't been very dedicated to the treadmill lately and the eating...well I just like food and it's soooo hard not to snack in the evenings. But I only have 84 days to get in shape.

Oh I am soooo looking forward to this trip!!
