My Review: Another fantastic video by the WITB team! We own all of the other four videos in this series already so our entire family was excited to watch the 5th one in the series too. Our kids stay engaged for the duration of the 50-60 minute video, but it is also broken up into two smaller segments for active kids who can't still for such a long period of time at once.

As a parent, I highly value the educational aspects of the video series. The kids learn some big words such as "apostasy" and "redemption"from the previous videos, and some new words such as the "trinity", but it is done in such a simple and fun manner that these words become easy to understand. The girls are learning about God's "rescue plan" and how this plays out throughout the entire bible, but more importantly, how this affects their own lives.

The best part is that it is fun! We all laugh throughout the video, and had a special surprise to see Darth Vadar (or a look alike) make an appearance in "Israel Gets a King".

This 5th video teaches the kids about obedience through the kings of the old testament. Just as kids often disobey, so did the kings of Israel, so we also learned about the consequences of our sin when we don't do what God wants us to do. I thought it was explained sufficiently, with the added bonus of learning of God's great forgiveness even though there will still be earthly consequences for our actions.

My Review: My girls enjoyed reading this story. It is a great reminder to them that praying is simply talking to God. They can talk to Him whenever and wherever they are throughout each day. It helps them to realize that God cares about all the details of their life and that we can approach Him in every and any situation. This would make a great gift for any child.

My Review: I enjoyed the concept of these collection of stories from yesteryear. I think it is important for our kids to understand what it was like to grow up in a different generation so that they don't become so consumed with their own generation which tends to revolve around "me". While we haven't read all of the stories in these collections, I think they will provide some valuable lessons for our girls while addressing it in a fun manner.

My Review: I have always been a fan of Dan Walsh's books. He captures the emotions of the characters in a very appealing manner. I appreciated the historical aspects of this story, particularly the factual details that he tries to mirror in this work of fiction. I found those details to be very fascinating as it proves that sometimes life is stranger than fiction. This was another good read!

My Review: This was a fun book to read since it was lighthearted and entertaining. The characters were very likeable, especially the quirky grandmother. The storyline was full of comedy and romance. It was easy to read and was definitely enjoyable.

My Review: I enjoyed the way that this book transported me back into the middle of the "dirty thirties". It was full of hard times and despair, but it also captured many beautiful moments along the way. I really liked that the heroine in this story was a young girl. She is full of energy and makes several attempts to preserve the relationships around her.

My Review: This book was emotional and dealt with a very controversial subject in a sensitive manner. I really appreciated how the author was able to show how there are always two sides to a story. I definitely enjoyed this story of trust, forgiveness and understanding.

My Review: This was a well-written book. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the characters were well developed. It was not a easily predicted ending, which I always appreciate. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this new author as much as I did and I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Ann Tatlock.

My Review: Brianna, age 7, absolutely loves "The Moon Story" book that we were given to try out! It taps into her creative side and allows her the freedom to make the story her own, as she imagines it in her mind. When I asked her what she liked best about it she said, "It's fun" and "Drawing is better than words". Brie has spent quite a bit of time with her book already and I know that this will be a keepsake forever. These books would make a unique gift for any creative child! My Review: I enjoyed this book and I easily read it as a stand-alone book, despite the fact that I have not read the first book in this series. The main character has a lot of difficult things going on in her life which leads her, at times, to make some bad choices along the way. Yet through all of the pain she is able to find healing and a fresh start.

My Review: I thought this was a cute heartwarming Christmas story. Some of the story was predictable, as would be expected from a Christmas story, however there were a few unexpected plot-lines as well. The main character was very likable, and despite some challenges in her personal life she manages to stay upbeat and positive. I really appreciated the new tradition created as she became "Mrs Claus". It was a fun twist on a regular custom. Overall I enjoyed reading this book.

Our kids have been engaged in the discussion,although I did find that they are too young for all aspects in this book, as it is geared for families with elementary through high-school aged kids. We are looking forward to continuing on in this book throughout the month of December.

Brief Update

Hi everyone. I know I rarely update my blog with anything personal lately but life is just BUSY!

So busy in fact that I haven't even had as much time to devote to my schoolwork. My original goal was to finish these 3 Athabasca University classes by Christmas. Even if I work non-stop between now and then I don't think that is a feasible goal anymore.

I was losing sleep over the stress of it all, and I was also turning into super-grouchy mom. That is not fun for anyone.

So I made a tough decision to continue working on these classes over the next semester, as I technically have until the end of March to complete them. This means more flexibility and less stress for me.

I have also registered for 1 course at the U of R that begins in January. It is the last pre-requisite that I need in order to actually apply for the Social Work program. They only take applications until the middle of January, so I also need to begin working on filling it out.

I would appreciate your prayers about this application, as I need to draw from my own personal work and volunteer experiences to answer the detailed questions about why I want to become a Social Worker. I don't think I'm great with words but I want to ensure that I do this correctly, and I believe that this is where God wants me.

I love to smile!

In fact, sometimes I think I smile too much, even when I don't really feel like it. It's a work in progress to be honest with people when I am not at my best.

However, most days I truly enjoy smiling. It is such a good way to relieve the stress of your day, or to tell someone how much they mean to me.

Some of my favorite things that make me smile?

Chocolate.
Coffee.
A foot rub.
Practicing the piano.
My silly kids.
Going on a date with my husband.

Quaker Journey To Wellness

Over the past few years I have really tried to be more conscious of the foods that my family consumes. I have introduced more whole grains; whether it be with pasta, rice or bread.

I've also stopped purchasing bread in the stores and now I know exactly what goes into our loaves, especially since we go through so much of it. It's also a great way to cut down on the grocery bills.

Actually when I'm baking bread, muffins, pancakes, waffles or biscuits, I use mostly whole wheat flour, and I also try to add a little ground flax into the recipes as well. I have made these changes gradually over time, but no one has ever noticed the difference in the texture or flavor.

I feel confident knowing that we are eating well, in addition to keeping lots of fresh fruits and veggies available also.

Are there still ways that I would like to improve my family's overall health? Sure.

I am trying to set a good example of balancing my lifestyle with exercise but I still feel like I fail at this sometimes. I have been getting back into a workout routine and it feels good to keep my body active.

What Did Our Kids Think: They loved this video! It was entertaining and fun. They both really enjoyed the music and the characters. Brianna (age 6) said her favorite character was "Captain Pete", and Ella (age 4) preferred "Buck Denver". When I asked them what they learned, right away Ella mentioned the book of Joshua. Brie then talked about the book of Ruth. Already because of this video they have learned the first eight books of the Bible. They have both asked if we could watch the other videos in this series so I'm sure we will be on the lookout for them.

What Did I Think: Excellent concept from the creator of Veggie Tales! This video tackled some heavy content in a light yet educational manner. Some tricky questions were answered in "Tricky Bits with Buck", and it also shared about the amazing message of God's love and forgiveness. I enjoyed the humor, so it goes to show that it's not just for kids. I appreciated the fact that my kids can learn more about the entire bible in a format that they love: DVDs. It also sparked some good discussion in our family as we watched it together. I think that this video series would make a great addition to any home or church library.

My Review: I always enjoy reading a good book, but Lynn Austin's books are in a completely different category! Seriously I couldn't possibly say enough good things about how she writes such fabulous stories. Her books are impossible to put down, as you easily get swept away with the characters and their lives. "While We're Far Apart" is another masterpiece that should be read by every christian-fiction reader.

Today my sweet little girl made a huge decision!

It is one that we have talked about for some time now, but until today she hasn't been ready for.

Normally she is a very cautious child, so I'm not at all surprised that she really needed to think things over first.

But I've seen so much change in her these last few months.

She is more confident of herself.

More giving of her possessions.

She is very kind and caring.

She loves with a heart that is much deeper than her age.

She truly has a heart that comes from God.

And today, she gave it back to him!

She asked him into her heart.

I can hardly wait to see what God has in store for her sensitive spirit.

He will do great things!

My Review: I enjoy the writing style of Tracie Peterson. She always has some interesting historical facts woven throughout the storyline, which adds to the appeal of her books. I enjoyed the strong opinionated female characters in "Embers of Love". Perhaps because I find myself relating to them in some way?!? This book definitely makes a good read for a rainy day or when you need some time to relax.

My Review: I enjoyed this book as it has all of the elements of an exciting book, complete with a character that works for the CIA. Many of Joel Rosenberg's books are shockingly accurate to real life events, sometimes written before the events have even taken place. The Twelfth Imam takes place in several time-periods, one of which being in the wake of the 911 tragedy. It was full of suspense, and even a little romance. I think anyone who likes to read stories full of action would enjoy this one.

My Review: Overall I thought this movie was fairly well done. It did a good job of capturing the emotions from this true story. I enjoyed watching the "extras" on the video, which interviewed the real Simpkins family. How this heart-wrenching day changed a man's life for the better is inspiring. How the entire community came together to help was incredible. I also appreciate the cleanliness of this film. There was no language, violence or nudity. Definitely a family film. If I was to look for a downside of the film, I would say that some of the actors could have been portrayed better, with a deeper look into their characters. I found one particular character to be rather suspicious, and I know that this was not the director's intent.

My Review: I think this is set up to make a really fun family event. The movie clips are exciting and make you want to see more of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader". I like the songs that are included in the CD and I know that my girls will be singing them for a long time. My favorite part of this kit would definitely have to be the Family Expedition Pack. It comes with a CD and a special treasure map, and the kids can help reveal sections of it throughout the family event. What a great way to engage the kids and get them involved! It also has questions to continue the discussion at home too.

The town that we just moved from a few months ago actually did the High Seas VBS this summer, which coordinates well with this, so I have already mentioned this kit to their organizers. It would be a perfect way to with connect the many kids that come to VBS but do not attend a church during the school year. It also continues with the Sailing Seas theme so the decorating and even some of the songs are the same, with some great new additions.

I am looking forward to hearing how it goes in a few months!

Overdue

Well I know that an update is long overdue on here!

Life is busier than ever, and some days I wonder why I still bother to keep up with this blog.

(The free stuff may have a little something to do with it!)

I do have some positive updates about the girls that I wanted to share on here.

Brie is maturing each week. She has a beautiful personality and more often than not she thinks of other people (namely her little sister) before herself. She is gentle and kind, and very generous.

Of course we know how intelligent she is. After all, she began reading one month after she turned 4. She has been reading for almost 3 years already, well ahead of the average age for new readers. She already reads entire chapter books on her own.

So when her teacher started sending reading homework home, we knew that it was going to be fairly boring for her (one sentence on a page). John spoke with her teacher and immediately the next day she was bringing home larger books, but still not something that would give her any type of challenge.

Just this past week she brought home a keyring that had some words that the kids were supposed to memorize. They were two-letter words, such as 'an, in, on, or'. It was attached with a newsletter that said to send back the keyring when the child could read all of the words on it. Well obviously she already knew them, but she did not want to tell her teacher that since "they weren't supposed to bring them back yet". We strongly encouraged her to read them to her teacher for several days, but Brie was very hesitant to say anything at all. However, finally yesterday she did it! And she read the other keyrings that were supposed to be sent home for the remainder of the year as well!!

As a reward, she got a new chapter book and a little keychain that says "Reading Rocks", from her teacher. I am excited to know that her teacher finally GETS how good of a reader she is already.

Another great thing about yesterday?

It was the very first day, since school started in August, that she ran out to the playground by herself when we dropped her off.

Both of these situations show me how much she has matured. She is most often a painfully shy kid who does not like to be alone or draw attention to herself. She somehow managed to conquer both of those in one single day!!

As for Ella, well her Pre-K teacher said it best:

"She is the Belle of the Ball!"

She loves making new friends and having a good time wherever she is. So everyone wants to be with her and have fun too!

She is loving school and dance, and now she has begun piano as well. She is in the Music for Young Children (MYC) program, which seems to be a lot of fun so far. Even Brie has enjoyed participating in the group activities.

What about me?

Things are going well. I'm trying to get adjusted to another type of class, as I am taking three this semester through AU. These courses are all "independent study" which means I am entirely on my own for learning the material. There is nothing to read but the textbooks. So it will be a new type of challenge, but I'm hoping that it also provides a bit more flexibility in how I get through the semester.

It also appears that the U of R will also be offering the English class that I need in order to actually apply to the Social Work program. I have enough credits now, I have just been waiting for this last pre-requisite to be offered somewhere! This class will begin in January. The deadline for Social Work is also January. This means that I could apply under the assumption that I would pass that course.

I'm excited at the prospect of actually being in the SW program, but I'm also nervous about the application as it's fairly detailed with regards to work and volunteer experience, and how this relates to a career in SW. I'm also trying to find ways to get involved already in our new town so that my volunteer experiences are current. I have submitted my name at the elementary school for anything, but I'm also hoping to get involved in our church somehow.

John has been busy with renovations around the house. He has completed the improvements on both main floor bathrooms; with new flooring, new cabinets and some paint.

We are also putting up a garage in the very near future, which we are both excited about. Our concrete should be getting poured on Monday, and our materials are coming on Friday. This is the third house that we have lived in, and this will be our very first garage. It will be sooooo nice to get rid of the tools, camping stuff, and other miscellaneous clutter in the house and shed.

Well I think that kind of gets us up to date.

For now, anyways!

My Review: I really enjoyed reading this book, and could not put it down for long before I would anxiously pick it up again. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed the relationships between each one. Kim Vogel Sawyer does not disappoint as she captures the strained tensions as well as the joys of each friendship, and easily puts it onto paper.

Bragging

I just wanted everyone to know that John received an award last night!!

The "Award of Distinction" was to recognize his leadership and motivation in a specific area of his work. I won't name specifics on here, but it was related to something that made national headlines in the media in 2009.

He is too humble and doesn't think that he is deserving of this award. Especially since two of his previous co-workers received the same award. He claims that they were just doing their jobs.

What other people don't know is how John encouraged his co-workers to set a high goal (for a specific type of police file) for their office for the entire year. Originally they laughed. It was too high. It was impossible.

But they tried and very nearly met their goal. And now they are being rewarded for their efforts.

John received a lovely framed award, as well as a watch with the word "Distinction" on the face of it.

I am very proud!

Blessing

Life is getting back into a "normal" routine once again.

Brie has been back at school for a full week now. Every day her confidence grows and she looks forward to what each day will hold. She is enjoying the friendships that she has made so far.

Especially the one with our next-door neighbour girl. She is in grade two and has been a real blessing to us in the way that she excitedly looks for Brie on the playground and runs to greet her each morning!

The family that this girl comes from is a unique situation for a small town, as she has 2 moms. Already we have begun discussions with our kids about lifestyles.

I'm SOOOO not ready for those discussions yet. I want to shelter my girls from the world just a little bit longer yet.

It will be a fine balance of age-appropriate explanations and non-judgmental Christian love (which I realize some may find to be an oxymoron). I don't ever want to provide an explanation that could someday be repeated to their family and end up offending them.

It's a tricky situation. One that I realize could be handled in many different ways.

I certainly don't claim to know all the answers, but I am praying that God will use this situation to help us, above all, to teach our kids about love and acceptance. I am sure that this family has already met their share of condemnations and ostracism. So we need to be careful in making sure that we don't contribute to that as well.

Maybe instead we can be a small blessing in their lives, as they have been in ours already.

My Review: This was a fun story to read to my girls. It was a good reminder that God is with us in every detail of our days, and that we should never stop looking for Him. The kids especially enjoyed reading about the close relationship of the child and his grandpa. I'm sure we will be reading this many more times yet to come.

First Day of Grade One

Well I officially have a grade one child.

We all dropped her off at school this morning, but she requested that John bring her inside to her classroom.

Last week Brie and I met her teacher, which was a suggestion from her Kindergarten teacher from last year. It made a huge difference in her stress level from the move and everything.

We have also met some girls that will be in her class through the swimming lessons that she was in.

That was one of the main reasons for taking lessons this summmer...to meet kids.

So I thought that today might go a little smoother on her since she already knew some names and faces.

But the tears began when we parked in front of the school this morning. The poor girl is terrified.

I didn't think that I would cry at the concept of her going into school full days, every day. But I do cry at the thought of my little girl, scared and alone.

So I am doing lots of praying for her today. Praying for friendships and a successful first day. Praying that she looks forward to tomorrow and the days to follow.

Ugh, this is hard.

My Review: I always enjoy a good fast-paced suspense story. This one had elements that reminded me of "The Da Vinci Code", because of its intrigue and historical aspects. I was captivated throughout the storyline, and did not find it to be too predictable at all. Definitely a good book for those who love a good action story.

My Review: This was a fresh take on the "Princess and the Pauper". A spoiled rich girl is tired of the pointless existence of her life when she is being forced to marry a man simply for his money. She convinces her maid to swap places with her on the long journey across the ocean, but is then surprised that life isn't as easy on the other side either. It was interesting to see her slowly discover her new identity, and pride in her own accomplishments as a person without financial means. I also enjoyed the struggles of the maid, from a rags to riches lifestyle she fears her discovery as an outsider. This was a book that I couldn't put down, even though I was fairly certain of the ending!

My Review: I thought this was easy to read, and was a wonderfully heartwarming story. Through the sweetness of a little boy with Down Syndrome, the main character is finally able to understand what is truly important in life. I enjoyed reading Angel Song.

Neglect

So I have been neglecting this blog once again. (Shocking, I know!)

I have been in a bit of a funk, too much going on, and yet at the same time, not enough worthy of blogging about.

And if I'm being completely honest, I am a wee bit lonely.

Not because I haven't had any company out here since our move last month. In fact, we have had quite a few visitors already which I greatly appreciate. We are getting more visitors next week as well.

In spite of all of this busyness (of holidays, visitors, house renos, trying to pick classes for school, and the stress of all of it) I have still managed to become sad.

It's also not because I haven't met some people around town. One of John's coworkers attends "our" church and we have seemed to hit it off nicely already with his family. We have been welcomed by neighbours, the church and the RCMP family.

But it's still difficult to adjust to moving. I don't KNOW anyone here. There is no one here who really understands who we are and gets us. Everyone that I am close with is far away.

Until today I had been bottling it all up. I realize that is not a healthy option, but it was the option I took nevertheless.

The thing that pushed me over the edge?

My sewing machine.

I decided to try to get myself out of this sadness by beginning on Ella's quilt. I figured that I would have a solid couple of weeks to work on it before the craziness of September begins. I got a brand new work table this week (which was an entire ORDEAL in itself! Let's just say that Ikea needs to work on their customer service) to use exclusively for my crafty adventures. It is set up in our bedroom by a big bright window. I had been excited to start sewing again; all the fabric was washed, ironed and cut out already. The only thing left to do was to turn on the sewing machine and begin putting it together.

Insert frustration here!!!!!

Stupid machine keeps jamming on me and I got nowhere after 90 minutes of trying last night. (I cleaned it, I tried to sew again. Then I took it apart and cleaned it again to no avail. It still jams on me.)

I think it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Today I have been battling the tears.

It did open up some good discussion between John and I today. We each are feeling it in different ways, but it is good to know that HE understands what I am going through. We aren't always good at communicating (is anyone?!?) but I'm glad that we are on the same page.

Moving is never easy. Especially when it wasn't really our decision in the first place. We don't really handle change well, especially when it means stepping out of our comfort zones and meeting new people.

But... we are together. My stupid sewing machine is not working, and may actually end up getting smashed into a million pieces, but we are together.

And for now, that will have to do.

Quick Thoughts

This past month has been a whirlwind of busy activities! There is no good way to properly summarize all that has gone on so I thought I would just give a brief list of some of my current thoughts.

Painting a room is relatively cheap. Painting the entire floor of a house in a month (including ceilings) gets more expensive.
Getting a hold of any general contractor to get a quote is very irritating and pointless.
Moving has been very stressful on my kids.
Camping with our good friends this past week was good for everyone, until we needed to say goodbye to them once again.
I wish I could save my girls from the pain of missing their best friends and family and it breaks my heart to see them cry.
Toy Story 3 was awesome but definitely worthy of kleenex.
We are looking forward to a much-needed trip to Ikea this week so I can continue unpacking my boxes.
The kids are also excited about watersliding and Calaway Park! (nothing like a fun diversion to help them forget that they are sad too)
Small town church hospitality is amazing! You won't find such a warm welcome anywhere else.
Our neighbours are much friendlier than in our previous town and there are kids everywhere.
2 boys came to our yard the other day and asked our girls to kiss them. (just imagine how happy protective daddy John was when he heard this...I think I may have seen steam come out of his ears!)
The girls thought the kissing boys were odd which may have led John and I to give a slight cheer when we think of them 10 years from now.
I am hoping to start Ella's quilt this month.
I also need to figure out some solutions to school stuff as the U of R is not offering anything applicable for this upcoming fall semester. I may have to outsource through another distance university such as Athabasca and just know that I am paying approx. $200 more per class this way. Sigh. It is expensive.
Today is the 15-year anniversary of when John asked me out. Happy "anniversary" sweetie! I love you.

My Review: I enjoyed this fast-paced action book. It was full of suspense and I had a great time trying to figure out the ending. The main character was intriguing; he was cynical and and a broken fragment of the popular man that he used to be. I am looking forward to reading more books in the Roland March series!

Changes (again!)

***There was a problem viewing the pictures before so I have tried to copy them in a different way this time!***

I have been very slow to update my blog, what with the water "issues" in our old house right before the move. Here's a collage of photos to show the basement in the middle of the demolition process. They essentially ripped out a section of the walls (which were ugly panelling anyways), tore out cupboards (aka the bar), and although I don't have pictures of the completed demos they also took out the shower as well. The new owners should be able to proceed with their repairs very shortly, once the construction estimate is finished.

Here's another collage of our old house. We sure grew to love this house. It was open and very spacious and it also had LOTS of built in storage (most of which I thought I would never use... and now I miss SO MUCH). The day we moved into this house was the day that Brie started walking on her own. Definitely lots of good memories in here, right from the very first day. It's always difficult to walk away from those memories but I am so very thankful for our camcorder to help us remember.

Some pictures are before packing and some are after. It's amazing how quickly our contents were reduced to boxes. There was some stress as the packers came a day earlier than anticipated but it all worked out alright in the end.

And now for our new home. As of today we have been here for 2 weeks already. We have already done some painting (there was WAY too much of that mustard color, including on the ceilings!) and made some smaller purchases in order to make this space our own. I will show the "after" photos another time, but for now you can see what it looked like on the day we moved in.

We are beginning to make this our home and I absolutely love the bright open concept that we get to enjoy here, especially the brand new kitchen! The girls are really enjoying their bunkbed and sharing a room with each other. We also bought them a trampoline on the weekend, to replace their old swingset which we sold before we moved. It has been a big hit!

My Review: This was a good book to read on yet another rainy cloudy day. I enjoyed seeing these women become hardworking and knowledgeable about all aspects of ranching. I also appreciated the tension between the main characters as they fought their initial attraction to each other based on their preconceived notions.

My Review: This book was chock full of good advice and research related to parenting in the 21st century. It emphasizes the importance of having a network of friends that are dealing with similar situations in their own parenting lives. Several times it refers to MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), which is an international organization that has established "mom" groups all over, however I believe that it is mostly a US program. That being said, this book was really important for me to read right now as I prepare to leave my friends and start over in a new town where I don't know anyone. It would be easy to hide in the security of my home and feel like a victim of this move at times. However it is also my responsibility to get out there and meet people. This book encouraged me to get "out there" and start establishing some friendships, at the park, the church or wherever... before a sense of isolation sets in. It's for my own wellbeing, but it will also help me to be a better mom by having those supports.

My Review: I always enjoy fiction when the main character is a strong successful woman and this book is no exception. I was cheering for Hannah as she set out to establish her dressmaking business in a new town, despite the complications that arose along the way. The dynamics between the characters was also very entertaining. This book was fairly predictable but in a good way, and I am looking forward to more books by Karen Witemeyer as this was her first novel.

It didn't require a huge time commitment to sit down and absorb what was written, and it also didn't have a really heavy reflection aspect to it. There were a few questions to consider but nothing that couldn't be accomplished in a short amount of time. I was encouraged by reading this.

New Hairdo

So I got a new 'do today.

I was tired of my current hairstyle and wanted something fun, although I wasn't sure what.

My hairdresser was excited!

She suggested this new style, and although it will take a little getting used to, I think I like it!

I haven't had bangs for a very long time.

We also got rid of my highlights, and added some blonde color midway.

That part I'm not so sure about.

My family is not too sure about this new 'do.

Brie just said, "It's different".

Ella said, "It's pretty" (albeit with some hesitation).

and John...not a big fan, but he is fairly resistant to change.

Hmm...

I really like that this story is based on a real mailbox that is visited frequently by people who are writing to the Kindred Spirit.

Tears and Stuff

So the last week has provided WAY more stress than is necessary when:
a) working on a large essay for a class that only has 1 1/2 weeks left
b) helping Brie finish up her Suzuki Book One to have a recital in her honor
c) preparing to move

Of course Saskatchewan is getting extremely high amounts of rain this year. So much so that some farmers have not planted a single seed in their fields. A town only a short distance away has already declared it an "agriculture disaster".

For us, time was feeling like it was on "pause". We are not anxious to deal with goodbyes and things, but the anticipation of everything can be exhausting. At this point we just want to get it over with and move on with our lives.

Enter the rainwater....

Water, water, everywhere.

Last week this was our theme.

The ground is literally soooo drenched that it had nowhere else to go. It is now forcing its way into the basements of most buildings around here, including our church, but also our home. Which will not be our home in another 2 1/2 weeks.

Yep.

We weren't sure whether to cry or yell last week. It felt very unjust and downright discouraging.

I tried to keep reminding myself that we have MANY blessings, including John's stable job. We will not have to struggle to keep food on the table, whereas this will be the reality for many due to the excess rain.

So we had water in our basement. We spent some money and picked up a wet/dry shop vac as well as a dehumidifier to absorb the moisture in the air. It wasn't keeping up, but our possessions weren't damaged either.

Next came the calls to a local contractor, who came out first thing in the morning to install a sump pump in our basement. (Our house is 45 years old and has never needed it before this year) By the way, small town businesses charge far less than they should for the professional work they do!

Then we phoned our insurance company. The bad news? Most companies do not cover groundwater seepage. Regardless of the circumstances. The good news? Ours does!! They sent out a cleanup crew the very next day, and will be back soon to give an estimate for repairs.

We are still a little unsure of how the whole insurance claim process will proceed, since we lose possession of this house very soon. Yet I do know that all we have to pay is our deductible. The new homeowners will not be getting an entire house right away, but they will be getting a renovated basement now! Flooring, drywall and 2x4s will need to be replaced.

Church on Sunday was different than usual. Many people are going through similar situations with their homes, and the church still had a lot of water. Yet the singing was great as it was honest in communicating the rough time that this is. I ended up crying for about half of the singing, partly because it was so appropriate for how I felt, and partly because I knew my time there was coming to an end.

Our church farewell is next week and I'm helping to lead singing with my dear friend Kristi. We made it through our practice without tears today. That is until she played the song that she is singing with her sister-in-law on Sunday. I knew it was coming, but that still didn't soften the flow of tears.

I am going to be a wreck on Sunday.

I'm trying to tell myself that these tears are a good thing. It means that God blessed me with an amazing best friend, and a wonderful church family that I will miss dearly. I know that He has many more great things in store for us in our new town.

I just wish I could take my life off of "pause" and hit "fast forward" for a couple of weeks so that I could avoid the goodbyes. And the tears.

My Review: I was a huge fan of Dan Walsh's first book "The Unfinished Gift", which is the prequel to "The Homecoming". It was fun to continue with the same characters although I will have to admit that I enjoyed the first book more than this one. I didn't find it to be as emotionally gripping, and at times it felt like the story was rushed with gaps in the storyline. That being said, it was still an enjoyable book. I already had a connection with the characters so it was nice to find some closure for each of them.

My Review: I enjoy the writing style of Deeanne Gist as I can pick up one of her books anytime and get involved in the storyline. Maid To Match was a nice light read, mixed with some humor, romance and a glimpse into history. It was easy to read in a short amount of time!

Looking For Advice

I need some help!

I am trying to plan out a painting scheme for the girls' room in our new place. Of course I am trying to accommodate each of them with their favorite colors.

It's going to be difficult however.

Ella wants pink.

Brie wants red.

I've been browsing online for some ideas (as a way to avoid school and house related work!) and have found a few ideas. Keep in mind that we will have a bunkbed in their room, rather than two individual beds. However their beds, dressers and bookshelves are all white. As are the window trim and doors in the room.

What do you think looks nicer for a girls room?

Light pink on the top 2/3 of the room, with coordinating red on the bottom?

Chair rail or no chair rail?

OR.....

Light pink on all walls with 1 or 2 walls striped with coordinating red?

Do you have any other ideas?

Last night we drove to the city to see Robert Munsch!

Although I purchased the tickets months ago, it was still a rushed trip as Brie had school and John was working, although they both finished their days a little earlier than normal.

Up until a week and a half ago, I was super excited to see the master storywriter and storyteller.

Afterall, we own about a dozen of his children's books. And Brie typically takes out 2 of his books from the library every day at school. So much so that the librarian has joked about it with me! We just love his stories. The repetition and humor in every story is pure genius.

When we told the girls that we were going, Brie applauded for about 10 minutes straight. She just loves his stories! In fact, recently she created her own chapter book and announced that she is going to be an author AND artist for her own books someday. (It wouldn't surprise me at all. This girl has some TALENT!)

So we have been looking forward to this for quite a while already.

Until we heard from a "friend" that Robert Munsch has been in the news recently. And not for something good either. So I had to google it to find out for sure.

*gulp*

Yep, he is a drug addict.

But he has been clean for 4 months.

4!

F. O. U. R. months.

Pretty much about the time that I bought the tickets. But we made the decision that this wouldn't negatively affect the children. They have no clue what drugs even are. Even knowing this man's battles with addictions doesn't take away from the fact that he is very talented.

So we went with a mostly positive attitude.

Although I do have to be honest and say that both John and I questioned if he was sober or not last night as we watched him with a critical eye. (Darn RCMP makes you very sceptical!)

However the show was very entertaining. He didn't chat first, instead he just jumped right into the first story. The audience loved joining in on the repetitive parts of the stories, as well as volunteering to be the characters in each story.

Ella LOVED joining in on the repetitive parts of the stories. Loudly. She is quite the dramatic child so she also sat very still for the entire hour of the show. When it came time for "Love You Forever" she snuggled close and demanded that we each take a turn rocking her back and forth. The song for that story is still stuck in my head this morning. But that is alright since this is one of my favorite books.

Neither of our girls even considered putting up their hands to volunteer for a story. That is until Robert Munsch (do I need to add his last name every time I talk about him?) asked if any parents had loud children. Then Ella's eyes lit up as she threw her arm into the air.

I love that girl, despite (or maybe it is because of...) her loudness! At least she knows that she is noisy.

Brie had a great time too. She is more reserved when showing her excitement but she was giggling along with everyone else. I even saw her yelling out the repetition a few times! (Way to go girl!)

It was a fun time for everyone. John's favorite was when he did "The Paper Bag Princess" and a dad was volunteered to be the dragon from the story. Poor guy was not very animated but it made for some really funny entertainment as he had to "fly around the world".

We enjoyed many stories that we knew (Up Up Down, Mortimer, Moira's Birthday to name a few more) and some that we hadn't heard before. I was positive that Brie had taken out every single one of his books at least twice, so it was a little surprising to find out there was some that we did not recognize.

I'm so glad that we all enjoyed it and had fun.

Q: Let’s talk about the way churches usually do a women’s retreat. What makes Group’s retreat-in-a-box such a great alternative to the usual retreat setup?

A: The traditional approach to a women’s retreat has been to look outside of the church for content and leadership, usually by hiring a speaker for the weekend. This tends to result in a lecture environment where women do a lot of sitting and listening. With a Group retreat, churches have access to all the resources they need to lead a meaningful, life-changing retreat, including the opportunity to encourage the women in their own congregation to fulfill the leadership roles. A Group retreat is about interaction. We give women ample opportunity to discuss, to share their hearts, and to make new friends.

Q: What kind of woman will be touched by a Wonder Full World retreat?

A: We really want to engage women of all ages and from a variety of experiences. This retreat was written to engage both married and single women, mothers and those with no children. In Group’s 2009 State of the Church Report, we discovered that 94 percent of women’s ministry leaders we polled felt that reaching younger women was a great area of need for them, so that is one of our greatest target groups. There is also a special woman that we are thinking of as we plan the sessions—the woman who does not know Jesus. We include a gospel message in every retreat, shared simply, and we tell the leader of that session to be prepared to share her own salvation story. We have also included all the Scriptures in the participant journals so that women who don’t know much about the Bible won’t have to search for them.

Q: As you develop new ministry materials, what steps does your team at Group take to ensure that those materials will really connect with women?

A: One of the most important aspects of the creative process at Group is the research. We do focus groups with women all over the place, with both the women who love retreats and those who hate retreats. We are intentional in creating a retreat to meet the needs of many women, and what those women tell us is that they want to be able to talk and make friends, not just sit and listen. We have incorporated lots of discussion time, allowing women to share their own stories of how God has worked in their lives and what they hope He will do in their lives. Once we have completed the actual content, we lead every retreat ourselves with a group of real women before we market it to churches. We invite teens as young as 14, and we don’t put them at the kids’ table because we see these retreats as great opportunities to initiate relationships that will become mentoring relationships.

Q: As a woman equipping churches to minister to women, what do you see as the biggest challenge women’s ministries face today?

A: I think the biggest challenge is to come up with new and creative ideas for engaging women. Most people know they need to do something different, but nobody wants to change. They wish they could reach more women, but they are bound to tradition. We don’t wear the same clothes now that we wore ten years ago, so obviously we are willing to change some things in our lives to stay relevant in the culture. But for some reason, nobody wants to give up on the Christmas Tea, for example, because it was once the highlight of the women’s ministry year…15 years ago! No wonder so many women perceive women’s ministry as something for their moms. For some ministries, reaching more women could be as simple as offering a women’s Bible study in the evenings as well as in the mornings so that working women can attend. But none of this will happen until someone decides to change.

Q: Tell us more about Wonder Full World. What was the inspiration for the “around the world” theme?

A: That was based on research. We do focus groups and research to determine the next theme. We were tossing around the question: where do we want to go? Then we realized that we had a seven-session retreat…and there are seven continents, seven wonders of the world. But women don’t care so much about the “wonders of the world.” They wonder about their faith, their families, their purpose, and their God. As women began to tell us what they really wonder about, seven clear themes emerged. We have called them the Seven Wonders of a Woman’s Heart. They are things like: “I wonder if anyone cares about me…I wonder if I matter to God…I wonder where God is when life is hard…I wonder if I can make a difference, etc.”

Q: What is included in the Wonder Full World Women’s Ministry Retreat Kit?

Tears

This morning the girls and I wanted to take full advantage of the sunny weather, and the break in this horrible rainy season, and go to the park.

Apparently everyone else had the same idea this morning as the park was full of energetic happy children.

The kids were running around having a blast, and the parents were also thrilled to be out the house and finally enjoying some adult conversations.

We were there for quite some time, and I noticed that Ella had been sitting by herself for quite some time, on some large rocks that are on the edge of the park. So I journeyed over to see what the problem was.

The poor girl sat with tears in her eyes and she looked very sad.

The reason for her tears?

Her best friend moved away in December. Time has not softened the loss that Ella feels when she thinks of her friend Danielle. Today she was remembering how she and Danielle would run around and play at the park.

It makes me cry just thinking about it. I wish I could take that pain away for her, and I pray that our upcoming move will help her to find a new best friend for the years to come.

I have had many tears in the last days as our time here draws to a close. Just this past weekend I was watching my best friend Kristi as she tested for her 5th black belt in Taekwondo.

Yes, her 5th black belt.

She is awesome! She is now a Master of Taekwondo.

I was amazed as I watched her skill and confidence, but I had tears in my eyes as I thought how soon our time together was coming to an end.

(And yes....I feel a little silly for watching Taekwondo and crying)

I have no doubt that we will continue our friendship, no matter the distance that separates us.

But I'm still like that little girl sitting on the rock by herself, with tears in her eyes, thinking of the wonderful moments that we have shared together and wondering why it can't stay the same.

Meds

I have been on the meds for my Essential Tremor for a solid month now.

Both the pharmacist and the neurologist recommended that I give it 4-6 weeks to "kick in".

I have been assessing my tremor to determine if there has been any change.

Honestly, I don't think there has been. Which can happen in some cases, and apparently an increased dosage will not help either.

Not that I want to up my dosage anyways. I have been feeling very blech and VERY tired lately. I have been extremely unmotivated, which is not ideal since we move in a month and I'm supposed to be working on a large essay for another class. I just can't seem to get the energy to do much of anything these days. In fact a simple trip up the stairs has tired me out some days.

Last night I actually looked up the side effects of this particular drug to see if what I'm feeling is "normal".

Here's what it says: Dizziness, lethargy, weakness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, fatigue, anorexia, anxiety, mental depression, poor concentration, reversible amnesia and catatonia, vivid dreams with or without insomnia, hallucinations, paresthesia, incoordination.

Right.

So the lethargy, weakness, drowsiness, fatigue, depression and insomnia are not just in my mind. It's really from this drug.

And really are those symptoms all supposed to be different from each other? I'm surprised that they listed that many similar side effects.

No wonder I've felt so tired!!

So I have made the decision to discontinue these meds. I have wean myself off of them slowly since it also affects my blood pressure and heart rate. But I'm ready to get back to "normal" again, if such a thing is possible.

It just means that I need to get used to having this stupid tremor forever.

I KNOW that the effects of the meds just isn't worth it either. However, I need to learn how to not be embarrassed by the shaking when people comment on it. Which is challenging since "stress and social interactions tend to worsen the tremor".

Lovely.

At least I won't be so exhausted all of the time.

Our elementary school is fortunate to have several SMART Boards so I have seen a few cool demonstrations during a recent "Open House" that the teachers hosted.

The principle handed out some electronic devices to several parents in the audience and "tested" them on some questions related to the school. The SMART Board was able to show who hadn't buzzed in with their answers yet, but it also formed the answers into a graph. It provided a great visual for everyone, and it looked very easy for the principle to use.

In Brie's Kindergarten room we also saw what the kids do every morning with the SMART Boards. They check out the weather, and play interactive games with the touch of a finger on the screen. It made sounds and was very colorful and exciting to watch!

My Review: I thought this was a fun and light-hearted book. I have heard Ken Davis speak before so I was expecting more of a fall-off-of-my-seat-because-I-was-laughing-so-hard kind of book, but this was still enjoyable. I found that the short stories compiled in this book served as a good reminder to take the time to laugh with my husband. It is easily read in small amounts, and would also make a good gift for a married couple - young or old.

Critters

Living in a small town for the last 5 years, we have seen quite a variety of wildlife in our very own backyard.

Mostly it has been the usual birds and hummingbirds (which I'm currently waiting for), butterflies and bees, etc.

We have also seen many frogs, which the kids and cats always enjoy.

There has also been a garter snake.

MANY mice, and even a gopher that one of the cats scared into our shed.

A salamander that John found one evening.

A few days ago it was a new one.

Our sweet cat Jessie had brought her latest catch home.

What was it?

A bunny.

Yes. A real jack rabbit bunny.

It was very cute, but unfortunately it was also very dead.

Later on the cats were "feasting" on it. Ella looked over at the remains and said, "Look! There is chicken inside!"

Heh heh heh!

She cracks me up.

Except for tonight. This was the exception.

We had the hyperventilating freak-out child.

All because of a teeny tiny tick.

I'll be the first to admit that those hideous creatures creep me out. I am a city girl and honestly had not seen one before a few years ago. I am sure these things are pure evil.

I normally don't see them often, maybe once a year. But this year already I have seen lots. It must be an abnormally high season for them already.

Ella's freak-out "session" tonight was something else.

John had just returned to work for his evening shift after a brief supper break. Only a couple of minutes later I was running bath water for the girls.

Which is when we discovered the spawn of satan. Also known as the tick.

I didn't want to alarm the poor girl so I just tried to brush it off quickly. Eww! Unfortunately it was already attached.

Not my department, so I called John.

I also called him yesterday to rescue me from the 4 LARGE bumblebees that were in my house. (we get them every year in the spring and can't figure out how to stop them from sneaking into the house) I'm scared of stinging insects and really am no good to anyone if I am trapped with them inside my house!

Great guy that he is, he came home and helped out with the nasty tick.

Blech.

But it took a good 15 minutes of freaking out from Ella first.

We were mad and frustrated with each other and her.

She was either sobbing and/or clinging to me, or she was clutching her throat like she couldn't breathe from all of the energy she was pouring into her protests.

Brie was also crying because she was scared for Ella.

However we made it through to the other side.

Barely.

But we made it.

Whew.

Stressful

We are back at home after a crazy week away.

John and I had reviewed MLS for weeks and months leading up to our house-hunting trip so we figured that we had a pretty good idea of which house we would buy.

Until we drove past it and saw all of the exterior flaws that were not evident through pictures.

Let me just tell you that MLS can make a scary house look awesome.

However, pictures do not show the smell of cat pee throughout a house.

Or the PILES of dog poop in the backyard.

Or the fact that a house is really a mobile home placed onto a foundation.

Or the smell of cigarette smoke.

Or the serious work that would need to be done on a house.

Yikes.

We were so worried that we wouldn't find anything.

In fact it actually became a process of elimination. Which house do we Dislike The Least?

Sad, but true.

However I think we will be pleased with the home we chose. It has a new kitchen, new flooring, new windows. The one big downside is that it only has 2 bedrooms on the main floor. There are 2 more rooms in the basement, however I'm just not confident that either of our girls are ready for that adjustment, especially with the stress of moving and switching schools already.

So we left the decision up to them and they have chosen to share a room. Which of course means that they need a bunkbed.

We also have many other purchases that are necessary:
New fridge (as our existing one is old and probably won't come out of the kitchen now anyways)
Dishwasher (portable, since the redone kitchen does not have room for a built-in one)
Water softener (in small town Sask this is a necessity!)
Book shelves (goodbye built-in wall units...sniff..sniff)
Area rugs (no carpet on the main floor and I am always cold)
Loveseat or Couch for main floor living room
Computer Desk, ours was free many years ago and it is ugly

Oh yeah, and we also said that THIS time we would buy a house with a garage. We have said it before, but never ending up purchasing one that came with. So of course, this house does not have one either.

We are looking into the possibility of putting up our own, but the lot is small and it also is beside an alleyway. It may not work, but we will check it out anyways.

So those costs are adding up VERY quickly!

It was a stressful trip. The only saving grace was meeting John's new co-workers who all seem really nice. Plus, we stayed an hour away at a wonderful hotel where we could soak in the warm water every evening to unwind.

The drive everyday was beautiful! I am looking forward to living in another section of the province that I am not familiar with. We saw a lot of wildlife which is something that I never tire of.

So in about 6 weeks time, we will be moving.

The reality of it hasn't quite hit me yet.

5 Years

Tomorrow marks the 5-year anniversary of our move into our current home as well as the beginning of a new journey for our family. Since our time here is coming to a close, I thought it would be fun to look back on the last 5 years and highlight the big changes that this brought for us. Some are lighthearted, and some are more serious, but I hope you enjoy looking back with me...

(I have tried numerous times to change the format of this post but it just isn't cooperating! So I guess all of these points will be #1. Sorry!)

New Career - Obviously this was a big career change for John since he came from a machine shop. Switching to policing required 6 months of hard-core training away from home and we were so anxious to be together as a family again. Then there was the adjustments of shift-work, being on-call, learning all there is to learn (and continue learning!) about small town policing. For me it was learning how to survive as a police wife, as it can be very stressful when he gets called out to deal with those crazy people out there.

Small Town Life - Both of us grew up as “city kids” so we really had no idea what to expect when we moved to a town that neither one of us was familiar with. It took me a long time to adjust to life as a SAHM here when there is nowhere to escape to on those hair-pulling days of insanity. It took a while to get to know people and feel like this was “home”. In the beginning we took a LOT of trips back to the city just to feel normal, but eventually the city just became too loud and obnoxious. Small town life is peaceful and quiet. No one is rushed or rude when you stand in line at the grocery store. People know us by name everywhere we go. Sure, that has it’s downside too, but I have come to really embrace it over time.

Having Our 2nd Child - Very shortly after we moved here I found out that we were expecting Ella. We were certainly surprised that it happened so quickly, especially since getting pregnant the first time around was a lot more difficult. This certainly contributed to not getting to know people very quickly as I suffered from the “morning” sickness (yeah more like all day!) for MANY months. However once Ella was born we were able to get out more and start making some friends. She has brought so much joy and laughter into our family with her wacky personality and we love her dearly!

Got a Mini-Van - Yep. We are one of “those” people. And we have no shame in it. Really they hold lots of stuff and are great.

Started Scrapbooking - When Ella was born someone gave me a beautiful scrapbook as a gift. I really had no desire to begin this hobby, but I found out the price of the album ($50) and thought I should at least give it an honest effort to try it out. What a surprise when I found out that I actually enjoyed it!

Friends - I wish I could say it was all good, but the reality of life is that some friends are just there for a season. This has always been a sore spot for me (which really could be a blog post all on it’s own but I’m just not ready to be THAT open), but I am trying to work through it the best that I can. I have lost friendships, made new ones, and regained others. The great thing though is that my dear friend Kristi knew we were moving here and prayed for us before we even got here. She is someone that I can laugh with, cry with, and pray with. Our husbands are friends, and our kids are too! You really can’t ask for anything better, which is why we get together so often. When I think about leaving and moving away, they are the ones I think of first. God has truly blessed us with their incredible friendship and I KNOW that we will be friends for life! She has told me that she will be singing “Friends” by Michael W Smith at our church farewell. Normally I find this to be a super cheesy song, but I was at his concert last night (assisting at a Compassion table) and was bawling in the darkness of the balcony as the reality our our move hit me.

Learned How to Quilt - it was actually my friend Kristi who asked me if I wanted to help her make a baby quilt for a mutual friend. I thought it would be fun to try and it made a great keepsake too. We ended up making several baby blankets together, and I have successfully made 2 others on my own. I also made Brie’s quilt and have the good intention (I already have the fabric) to work on one for Ella as well.

I Began Blogging - Little Missus Sunshine is actually my third blog. Initially I began blogging as a way to connect with friends and family from a distance, but it has since evolved into doing product reviews as well, which I really enjoy.

Started Teaching Music Pups - I was looking for something to “do”, aside from being a SAHM. My mother-in-law had actually recommended this to me several times before I gave it any consideration. But eventually I took some training and started up my own early childhood music program. I taught several sessions with parents and their little ones and we had lots of fun together. This past fall I led music at Ella’s preschool, which had new challenges in a class of 22 without any parents to assist, but we had lots of laughs too.

We sponsored our first child with Compassion - I was at a Breakforth conference in Edmonton 3 years ago with my sister when we moved felt moved to sponsor a child with Compassion. This was one of the greatest decisions for my family as we correspond with Ashly, and more recently Mary, on a regular basis. I believe that God is using this organization to do amazing things around the world, and I am blessed to be a part of it. The Michael W. Smith concert saw approximately 60 new children find sponsors and I was so honored to be a witness to it.

We bought a piano! - LOVE IT. Playing piano will be a lifetime hobby for me. I’m not sure what our lessons will look like after we move, or who they will be with, but we will find a way to make it work. This was a lifelong dream for me, and I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to play.

Attending a Small Struggling Church - We moved from a church of 1200 in the city to a church of 25. What a shocker. One of our first weeks there, a “new” song was introduced circa 1970. John and I exchanged glances that said, “What have we done and why are we stuck here?!?” Music is just one of the areas that have been a struggle. But yet we have learned to celebrate the small victories in our church. They have really become our church family and we will be sad to leave them, especially since a wonderful woman there is actively involved with teaching Sunday School and keeping the kids excited about coming to church.

Got a Referral to a Neurologist - Just over a year ago I mentioned that I was experiencing what my family doctor thought to be an Essential Tremor in my hands. I only recently made it in to see the neurologist who also believes it to be the same thing. I am trying some meds to see if it helps to reduce the shaking of my hands, but so far I haven’t noticed any changes, although it was suggested to try it for at least a month so I will keep at it for now.

I Decided to Take University Classes - No one was more shocked than me when I decided to return to school. I had thought of taking one or two classes (to open up some reception-related opportunities) but never considered pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Yet the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I needed to think long-term and not just a couple of years ahead. Suddenly I knew that I wanted to become a social worker, because I love helping people and any volunteer work I have done in the past has always centered around this idea. The doors just opened for me to take distance classes through the U of R. I was so worried about how I would do on the schoolwork, and although it doesn’t come easily I have been impressed with knowing that I can do it. (Some classes have been more challenging than others, but to add a little brag.....91% is my highest final mark!!!!!!) At the end of June I will have completed almost one fifth of the entire degree program. So still a long ways to go, but one class at a time, right?

Sold Our House - This has been a big stress for us. We missed out on big housing boom in Saskatoon 5 years ago and we were worried about making anything on this house. For that reason we were reluctant to make any big changes to the house, other than a few small renos. John knew of another RCMP member who is moving here to replace him and emailed him a few pictures. They were very interested and begged us to hang onto the house until they could come see it. We spoke with our realtor who suggested we could list the house last Friday (one week ago) and sign a document stating that we wouldn’t take offers until Wednesday, giving this member the opportunity to look at our house. We ended up with THREE offers on Wednesday. All THREE parties then gave a second higher offer when they were advised of the competition. WOW. Thank you God! The sale is now completed and we are free to go look at houses in our new destination which due to some staff-shortages was either going to be this coming week (if we could sell our house quickly) or not until the end of June. The end of June being when we want to take possession of a new house, not start searching. It has been super stressful but God just continues to remind us that he is helping us out. Why am I so slow to figure this out?

My Review: I'm not sure if it's because of all the other stuff going on in my life right now, but I had a hard time getting through this book. I really wanted to try reading Erin Healy because I am aware that she has co-authored with Ted Dekker before and that alone piqued my interest. I honestly think that I was expecting a more captivating story that what I found. That being said, this book had lots of action and suspense. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and following along as they struggled to understand what was taking place in their lives. I just think it could have been smoothed out a little more, and some of the confusing supernatural plot lines could have been explained better. It was a decent book however.

This weekend we were finally able to put our house on the market, despite some craziness in the weeks and days leading up to it.

So far we have 3 VERY interested parties.

Only 2 of whom have viewed the house.

The third interested party is actually the member who is replacing John. We had emailed them some pictures a while back and they are coming out tomorrow night to view the house.

Because of this member not able to come out any sooner, we chose to not accept any offers until Wednesday.

At this point we may be looking at 3 consecutive offers.

WOW!

We are so very blessed. I am amazed and overwhelmed at the very idea of it.

(and a little ashamed for how stressed out I get)

For now I will just be thankful. And remember that God is steering this ship.

Moving Resources For Kids

I have recently purchased a few great resources for our kids to help them cope with our upcoming move. I am a bargain shopper and found all three of these books at greatly reduced prices!

The girls each received a copy of "My New Home and Me". It is a memory scrapbook, a great way for younger kids to deal with their emotions in a fun way. They can include pictures, fill in the blanks, and share how they are feeling about different aspects of the move.

The "Usborne Moving House Sticker Book" is also fun. There are picture and word stickers to put on each page, along with a search for the hidden duck. The girls are enjoying filling up a page each day.

"We're Moving" has been read many many times already. The story follows a girl who is sad to be moving. She does not want to leave her friends and she doesn't want to leave the flowers that she helped plant with her Dad. The reader follows her family as they arrive in their new home and sleep in empty rooms for the first night. We have had many discussions about this book, from how our cats will handle the move, to getting to pick out paint colors for our new house, just like the characters in the story.

So the kids are taken of in the book department. Now I just need to find some resources for adults....the stress some days is TOO MUCH for us to handle!

Treesponsible

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, I would like to tell you a little bit about a Canadian company that is making great efforts to be responsible in its consumption of natural resources.

Many of us are trying to make efforts in becoming more "green". By using less chemicals, by recycling, by composting, etc.

But how many of us consider going "green" when we buy our toilet paper or kleenex every month? Afterall, when dealing with sensitive areas we want the product to be soft, not necessarily good on the environment.

Majesta has made a promise to plant 3 trees for every one that they use to produce paper products.

They call it Treesponsible.

I will admit, I was a skeptic. But they have a Tree Planting Promise to ensure that their integrity remains strong.

I was quite happy with the brands that I currently use, so why would I consider switching?

At first I learned about the labels on any Majesta product. These labels tell us that their product is:

Made in Canada
From a SFI (Sustainable Forest)
Biodegradable and Plumbing friendly (made from natural wood fibres)
Made without dyes or fragrances
Whitened without clorin

Alright so they sound good, but what is the quality of their product like?

I was sent a sample of all 3 of the paper products made by Majesta. The tissue is soft and absorbent. The paper towel is a little thinner than I would expect, but it works well for the jobs I use it for. However I would prefer to have the "select-a-size" option in order to have less waste.

The toilet paper is something else.....

For this review I was required to do a water bottle test. I filled 2 water bottles with water and then added 5 squares of toilet paper to each bottle, one with Majesta and the other with another brand (which just so happens to be the one I usually buy).

I was instructed to shake each bottle only 5 times and observe the differences.

The competitor's brand was still completely intact. Not even slightly dissolved. The water was very clear.

Majesta's product was already breaking down. The water was cloudy and filled with particles of toilet paper.

Now for someone who has 2 little girls that constantly use too much toilet paper this was incredible! Our toilet gets plugged on a regular basis and I always wrote it off to the fact that it's from the kids. Apparently it was also because the brand I buy does not break down.

I left the water bottles out for a full day and the other brand never did break down.

So next time I buy toilet paper, I will absolutely be looking for Majesta! The water bottle test really sold me on their product.

As part of the Treesponsible campaign, Majesta is working towards a goal of planting 1 million trees this year. They are almost halfway there already! When you purchase their products, you can be assured that you are assisting them in this amazing effort.

I don't have much to report as I'm in the middle of finals this week.

I just finished writing my Psychology exam tonight and I am happy to say that I will never EVER take a stupid class like that one again! I absolutely hated it!!

Now to work on my "take-home" exams, which consist of all essay questions.

(Sigh)

Oh, and our appraiser isn't coming until next week so we can't even list our house until then.

(Another sigh)

This is taking forever.

My Review: I was instantly drawn to this book when I saw the front cover endorsement from Dee Henderson, a wonderful author that I enjoy. The story is action-packed and realistic as it deals with the dangers of online predators, something that scares me as a parent of two young daughters. The characters were believable and engaging. I am looking forward to the other books coming out in the "Women of Justice" series.

What's Next?

Alright so I thought I would briefly address the RCMP move here for those of you who are curious!

There are hundreds of pages of information, so it can get overwhelming for those of us who haven't experienced a move with them before.

Sure we did the move when John graduated from Depot, but the process for new recruits is very different from those who are already employed with them. The biggest difference is cost. Last time we had to pay for realty fees, legal fees etc.

This time, we really pay for nothing, although the funds come from 3 different sections.

And it's only fair since they make us move every 5 or so years!

Later on when it comes time to pack up this house, we don't have to lift a finger. They pack it all and deliver it all. Very convenient, although they will refuse to move anything with liquids (think cooking ingredients like cooking oil and vinegar, or cleaning products) or anything that could be flammable. So our van will be very full with stuff that we have to take on our own.

We are just waiting to hear from the Relocation people to have our current house appraised. Once this is completed then we can list our house for sale.

When the sale is completed (all conditions removed), then we are authorized to go on a "House Hunting Trip".

I am getting fairly anxious to get everything underway. Several people have commented that our house shouldn't take long to sell, and I'm really hoping this is the case. I want to know where we are going to live next!

I have never been to the town we are moving to, so I would like to drive around and see the sites. Hopefully we are successful in finding another great house to live in too.

My Review: These stories deal with some good issues that younger kids face. I also really liked the brief discussion that follows the end of the story. It helps to explain the moral of the story in a way that kids will understand. It's not preachy but it does use a bible verse to help with the explanation as this is a christian resource.

The kids are having a blast listening to one of these stories every day! I honestly thought Ella would be too young to appreciate an audio book at age 4, but she is loving it just as much as her older sister. We listened to one on the way to a friends' house the other day and we were able to listen to all 3 chapters of one of the stories in those 20 minutes. So it can easily be broken down into smaller sections for kids who don't sit still for long. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much the girls are enjoying this. I will definitely be on the lookout for more Adventures in Odyssey audio books for my kids.

For several years now I have taken pictures of the girls sitting on the front step by our house.

Quite often they have enjoyed a tasty snack while sitting there.

Most likely it was to get them to sit still long enough for me to take some pictures!

But my, how they have grown!

And a few days ago...

I think they are getting tired of taking pictures in this same location!

Moving

Well our transfer is now official. (Check out Facebook for the details!)

Someday in the near future, this house will belong to someone else.

Later on I will allow myself more time to grieve this change and the fact that I have to say goodbye to some dear people, but for now I am excited.

Excited at the possibilities that lie ahead of us in our new destination.

Now begins the process of dealing with the Relocation people through the RCMP. The details are lengthy (110+ pages of information) but it will be nice to get our first transfer done so that we understand how this all works.

Right now it is fairly confusing.

Several people have asked me for details about how the moving process works with the RCMP but I won't bore you all with the details. (unless you want to know more)

For now, we will just celebrate that we know for sure where we are headed next!

Procrastination

I have a midterm exam in two days.

I also have an assignment due in two days.

But I don't want to work on either one.

Instead I want to spend time being silly with my kids.

I want to get some fresh air.

I want to CLEAN my house. Not the surface clean with floors and bathrooms, but the CLEAN that is necessary in order to list our house in a few short weeks.

I want to feel like I am accomplishing something today.

Other than sitting alone in my too-quiet room with my computer.

I know that schoolwork is necessary. And that I alone chose to do this.

But somedays schoolwork sucks.

And I also know that by procrastinating I am setting myself up for extra stress later on.

I totally get that.

But that doesn't help when I am thinking and processing a million other things in my mind right now.

I am constantly checking MLS for new listings in our current town (there isn't a lot right now, but the housing prices are starting to climb. finally.) and for the town that we are expecting to find out we are moving to in 5 days.

Yes 5 more days until John signs the paperwork to make it official.

John is now home again!!

After his 2 weeks away he is home!!

HURRAY!

The girls and I have all been clamoring for his attention so he's probably a little overwhelmed.

He is so wonderful and had a bouquet of flowers, Lindt dark chocolates and a new movie that I have wanted to see, "The Proposal".

I love him!

I asked Ella tonight what is the best part about having Daddy at home.

She thought for a while and then smiled.

"LOVE!"

I think she has it right.
